The Thermal Club
Pirelli Trophy West USA Round 02
The battles were as heated as the California desert weather last weekend, as 33 Porsches in five classes battled through two exciting Pirelli Trophy West USA series events at The Thermal Club near Palm Springs.
The series staged separate races for the GT3 and GT4 Porsche Cup Cars for the first time. Silver (Cayman Clubsport GT4 MR) and Bronze (2016 Cayman Clubsport GT4 Trophy) classes competed in their own two-race card, while Diamond and Diamond Masters (2017-2018 991.2 GT3 Cup), and Platinum class (2015-16 991.1 GT3 Cup) contested their own races.
On Saturday, Kevin Woods, in the No. 94 Mothers Polish/TruSpeed AutoSport 991.2 GT3 Cup Car, took pole and held the lead through the full 40-minute flag to flag event to take the victory over 911 Design’s Loren Beggs. After an early race battle with Beggs, Michael Zuieback (Competition Motorsports) took third overall and his third straight Diamond Masters class victory over Preston Calvert and Jim Walsh. In the Platinum class, Sean McAlister put his No. 00 Competition Motorsports machine on the pole and took the win.
But on Sunday, McAlister started second overall and made the pass on Beggs to take the overall and Platinum class victory in the 13-lap, 40-minute flag to flag caution-free race – his first overall victory in the series. All three classes were represented on the overall podium, with Loren Beggs second (and in the Diamond class lead) and Michael Zuieback third for the Diamond Masters victory.
In the GT4 races, Carl Toffelmire and Laura Ely rejoined their Bronze class battle on Saturday, having split the two races in Round 1 at Las Vegas. Competition Motorsports’ Toffelmire held Ely off for his third win of the season, while Chris Bellomo took the checkered flag ahead of The Racer’s Group teammate Jim Rappaport for the Silver Class win. On Sunday, Ely, driving for Black Sheep Racing, started on pole and broke away from the field for her second victory of the season. With Bellomo sidelined after an incident in qualifying, Rappaport took the uncontested Silver class victory.
The Pirelli Trophy West USA heads to Utah Motorsports Campus in Tooele, Utah for Round 3 of the season on May 4 - 6. Live timing and scoring can be followed at: http://www.competentmotorsport.com/index.php/live-timing/
